The Start Of The Naked Egg

Have you ever of the naked egg experiment? Where the egg looses its hard shell and it's soft and sort of see through? Well, we're doing that. Friday morning marked the start. We filled up our mason jar with vinegar and dumped in the egg and watched the start of stripping away the shell.
Egg in VinegarA Little More Bubbles
Immediately the calcium carbonate from the egg shell (that's what makes an eggs shell hard) started reacting with the vinegar (specifically the acetic acid) and carbon dioxide bubbles formed. It looked like the egg was bubbling which the kids loved. After a little while there were enough bubbles to make the egg float so we learned a little about buoyancy and how carbon dioxide is lighter then the vinegar forcing the egg up. Good lessons for the older two, Maddy was spinning circles in the kitchen entertaining herself through the lesson. I'll just have to make her read this post in a few years to learn it.

So now we wait. Right now we're waiting for Sydney to wake up so we can check on it, touch it and see what's going on in that jar. We'll keep you posted.
